The town is situated on Lake Tałty and Lake Mikołajskie. Lake Mikołajskie is the deepest ribbon lake in the Masurian Lake District.
The site of the present-day town was originally occupied by an Old Prussian settlement. The town owes its name to the church's patron saint, St. Nicholas.
The first mention of this town dates back to 1444, and just over twenty years later, the area was a fiefdom under the rule of the Teutonic Knights.
In the first half of the 19th century, the town experienced a significant revival thanks to the development of shipping in Masuria, and three years before the outbreak of World War I, the town gained rail connections to Orzysz and Mrągowo. These events had a significant impact on the dynamic development of Mikołajki.
